Our second assignment in the Makerspace elective was to use a 3D designing program called Tinkercad to make parts for our very own potato heads. We needed to design facial features, arms and legs, and accessories that could be attached with spikes into actual potatoes. The five of us in the elective divided into two groups; the boys, with Kaleb and Zach, and the girls, with Emily, Rachel, and me. We split up the work, so Emily made the arms, Rachel the legs and a cool hat, and I focussed on the facial features. Some parts of the process were easy, but several were hard.
The main problem I had in making the potato head parts was communicating with my teammates, Rachel and Emily. We each made a few parts, but had problems creating parts that were supposed to fit and work together, like the eyes and the glasses. My first pair of eyes were 70 mm wide, wider than the entire potato. I had to make them smaller to make them work, but because I didn’t see what Emily was doing with the glasses, they ended up not working together. I didn’t have any problems using the program to make the parts, but I didn’t like how there weren’t many shapes to use. I used the half-sphere the most for the eyes, nose, lips, and ears. We only had an hour to make all the parts, and I think I took about 15 minutes to make each of the parts. We learned how to use the program only a few days earlier, so we didn’t have a lot of experience with it. Next time we make the potato parts, I think I will work closer to my teammates, so we can see what all our parts look like together. Last time, I could mostly see what Emily was doing because she was sitting next to me, but Rachel was across the room from us. I didn’t see what her parts looked like until they were printed out.
The orange figures in the photo are from our first assignment in Makerspace, creating a creature. The octopus is mine, the dog is Rachel’s, and the “crazy creature thing that sits on a throne and is very electrifying” is Emily’s. They are in the photo with our potato head with all his parts because I wanted to show our first project and our third together.
